About the Artist
Catherine Lévy, who created Dorette, was born in Paris. At a very young age, she would make jewelry from what was close at hand: chick peas from the kitchen, pebbles extracted from the gravel, snail shells, and other objects. These tendencies naturally directed her to study art and design. During her travels to India, dazzled by the profusion and the beauty of jewelry worn in the streets of the cities and villages, she dreamed of models mixing Indian techniques and traditional forms from French provinces. She searched for, and found, precious and semi-precious stones, coarsely cut, that she chose for their colors and forms rather than for their value. The result is jewelry is comprised of one-of-a-kind pieces - the multi-coloured stones, both modest and precious, brut diamonds and glass set in gold and silver, diffuse a singular murmur and are always cheerful company. Catherine Lévy passed away in March 2022, but the art continues - led by her sisters and team.
The Dorette spirit is to combine the utilitarian with the sumptuous, the most precious with the most everyday, to celebrate only emotion, beyond good and bad taste, to assemble stones that were not made to meet. The jewelry is thus thought out and designed around the stones, all different in shape and color. The jewelry and assembly operations are entirely carried out by hand, without the aid of any machine, from the drawings meticulously prepared. This manual and sensitive work offers delicate irregularities that transmit all its soul to the jewel. Each one is different, neither ancient nor modern, they are light objects that inspire pleasure, wit and affection.
